Ulkumantjuta Ukarratjuta WLDP Grant 2008-09 Print E-mail
This project is entitled "Ulkumantjuta Ukarratjuta* Together for Learning: Waltja and WAVE women learning and talking up about training" (*Pintupi-Luritja language, meaning 'adult women and young women').
This design of this application is intended to meet both the focus and the specified outcomes for the 2008-9 WLDP Grants in a double manner, that is, through mutual engagement and mentoring, to strengthen the capacity of both WAVE as a national women’s NGO and that of Waltja to ‘represent, advocate and improve service delivery’ – to the diversity of Australian women and especially Aboriginal women living in remote communities in Central Australia.
The aim of this collaborative project is to enhance the engagement between WAVE and Aboriginal women in remote communities in Central Australia, a severely marginalised group of Australian women in regard to access and equity within vocational education and training.
Through this project the Aboriginal participants will be supported to:
o Consult within their own communities on training issues and needs, to workshop that information with other Aboriginal women from across the Central Australian region, and to present that information to regional service providers
o Mentor young women from their communities to participate in this consultation and in regional forums, and to gain experience and new skills in multimedia and community development work.
o Identify and/or assist in the development of nationally accredited training relevant to Indigenous women’s leadership and mentoring
o Partner with WAVE in direct advocacy to government about vocational education and training for remote indigenous communities.
The project therefore supports Indigenous women's leadership at several levels: the interpersonal level of mentoring relationship between senior and young women, the community level where participants investigate and map training needs/issues, the regional workshops and sharing of information with other Waltja women leaders, the regional training forums where Indigenous women are able to present their identified issues/needs tolocal service providers and government, and the advocacy to government at the end of this project. At all stages the participants will be supported by WAVE and Waltja project Management Committee members and staff.

WAVE Minmaku Palyantja Palya: Waltja Women Leaders Project 2008
The main focus of this project is in the recognition, acknowledgement and promotion of senior Aboriginal women who have been instrumental in the development of children's services and youth programs on their remote communities in Central Australia. Given the current government and media focus upon issues of child and youth safety and well-being in remote Aboriginal communities it is timely to promote recognition of local senior women's leadership, to enable these women leaders to see their work and knowledge valued in a national context, and to build relationships between women working 'on the ground' and women in national organisations contributing to national policy.
This Project is well on track, with most ‘on the ground’ activity being coordinated by Waltja to date. Joy Taylor (desert Knowledge) and Angela Lynch have been appointed as independent evaluators for the Project. The evaluation (an ongoing process from September 2008 to April 2009) will include qualitative data (e.g. from journals) to capture the ‘why and how’ of the project work as it unfolds, as well as questionnaires to be administered to WAVE participants and also Minmaku participants.
Kate Lawrence spoke about the project at the recent Meeting Place, organised as part of Desert Knowledge Conference in Alice Springs.
Kate, Elaine, others involved in the project (including evaluators) have meetings planned in Alice Springs 2-21st November, including drafting a mid term report.

WAVE Waltja Minmaku Palyantja Palya: Women Leaders' Project 2008 Print E-mail

In 2008, WAVE secured project funding from the Office for Women's 'Women's Leadership and Development Program Grants'. One of these is in the NT.

WAVE Waltja Minmaku Palyantja Palya: Women Leaders' Project 2008

The main focus of this project is in the recognition, acknowledgement and promotion of senior Aboriginal women who have been instrumental in the development of children's services and youth programs on their remote communities in Central Australia, These women have, in addition to their leadership work on their own communities, contributed to the development of Waltja Tjutangku Palyapayi Aboriginal Corporation (Waltja), an Aboriginal women's organisation which provides services and support across the Central Australia region.

Join the Campaign for Increased Investment in TAFE
Only TAFE can deliver the quality
training and education Australians
need. But for too long TAFEs
across the nation have been
forced to do more with less. New
research shows funding has been
cut and TAFEs are being forced to
turn away thousands of students
as a result. Staff workloads are
rising and budgets are falling.
Now is the time for action.
Send a message to Julia Gillard
and Wayne Swan letting them
know how important it is to
increase investment in TAFE in
this year’s budget. More info
